You know the feeling you get when you receive a like on instagram? Take a sip of Coors Light? Eat a Chick-fil-a Sandwich?
This is dopamine.
We are wired to chase dopamine. It allows us to feel pleasure.
The dark side of dopamine is addiction. It is responsible for our addiction to social media, drugs, and unhealthy behaviors.
Dopamine reinforces positive behaviors as well. It’s the feeling we get after we make our bed, finish an essay, or run 5 miles. Contrary to popular belief, we get just as much dopamine from finishing a chore as we do from winning a championship or closing the $1m deal.
This is why ignoring our daily goals give us anxiety. We know we didn’t handle our business today and there is more pain or shame in the future. Do you ever feel the heightened urge for a drink after a brutal day at work? It’s because our brain didn’t give us our daily dopamine rewards.
“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” Abraham Lincoln
Do the hard things in the short term for the long term payoff. It will help you find success, but more importantly it will give you more energy and make you happy.
The only person that can truly hold us accountable is ourselves.
